Winter Adventures
Abundant snow gives the Gunnison Country an unusually long Nordic season, often extending through May. Yet, for all the snow, the winter brings generally sunny, sparkling days ideal for cross-country excursions.
Crested Butte's Nordic Center maintains 20 kilometers of groomed trails, or seasoned skiers can strike out on their own in almost any valley. The center offers lessons, rental equipment and guided day and overnight ski tours.
In the heart of the winter, Nordic skiers often find groomed track at Mill Creek and trails near the Western State College campus. Nordic fans also ski South Lottis Creek and other areas in Taylor Canyon. The mountains provide almost endless ski touring. The Friends Hut, Gothic and Elkton backcountry ski huts offer lodging.
Adaptive Sports Center
The Adaptive Sports Center (ASC) of Crested Butte, Colorado is a non-profit organization that provides year-round recreation activities for people with disabilities and their families.
The mission of the ASC is: To enhance the lives of people with disabilities by promoting & providing successful outdoor adventure activities and experiential education with the highest quality instruction and equipment available.
The ASC was founded in 1987 when President and Mrs. Carter joined a group of local residents to form the Physically Challenged Ski Program of Crested Butte. Since then, the program has evolved into the year-round, nationally recognized Adaptive Sports Center. Thanks to the support of volunteers, dedicated instructors and staff, as well as the local community, the ASC has thrived and grown- from providing 30 alpine ski lessons during its first winter to becoming one of the premiere outdoor adaptive recreation programs in the world, offering roughly 4,000 activities annually.
For more information, visit the Adaptive Sports Center website at www.adaptivesports.org.
Snowmobiling
Snowmobile guide companies cover all corners of the territory, offering hourly, half-day, lunch and dinner tours. Among avid local snowmobilers, the Alpine Plateau area near Arrowhead is a prime center, offering more than one hundred miles of snowmobile trails in the high, uncivilized landscape. Other popular areas are Kebler Pass and Taylor Park. Many of the trails are multiple use. For up to date information on trail grooming in the Kebler Pass area visit www.snotrackers.com.
Ice Skating

Gunnison's ice skating rinks and warming houses serve as community centers for all ages, from novice skaters to hockey fanatics. Gunnison has two public skating rinks plus a hockey rink that hosts a variety of hockey competitions.
For a completely different experience, distance skaters glide for countless miles on Blue Mesa Reservoir. During good ice years, the Park Service maintains an ice rink near the boat ramp on Blue Mesa.
For information on rink hours visit cityofgunnison-co.gov.
Ice Fishing
Don't be fooled; winter can bring the best fishing in the Gunnison Country. Fly fishermen catch huge rainbows in the catch-and-release area below Taylor Dam, where the water is still open and the fish are ravenous. Several lakes offer excellent ice fishing: Blue Mesa (rainbow and brown trout and kokanee salmon), Taylor (huge lake trout).
